Let's Dance

A study of movement, capturing the essence of dance in works large and small. Inspired by the fluid motion of the body in performance of dance and song. The images vary in style and palette while capturing the spirit of music’s physical rhythms.

This work was Exhibited at NTC @ Liberty Station, Mandell Weiss Gallery, Dance Place, 2650 Truxtun Road, Building 175, San Diego CA from May thru July 2013.

Tango
After seeing the Tango performed live in Argentina I was compelled to capture the passion of the dancers.
The drawings are studies for my series of paintings exhibited in 2009. They are "drawn" with paint squirted from a bottle, trying to catch the fluid motion of dance.
The paintings were wide ranging in the original series which is now mainly in private collections. I was working with different locations for my dance partners and playing with line shape and color as usual.

The Tango series was a wonderful experience. I was using some of the square patterns I had been working with before. And I also included singers and just tried to capture the feeling of the dance. I explored a lot of variety within the basic form.

Wire Women
For a long time I have been celebrating the female figure in line on paper and canvas. The series stretches across several decades. There have been many variations but the essential depiction of the gracefulness is a constant.
It is an exploration of the use of line to capture form. The content is about joy and being happy in a physical way. Women face a lot of issues around body size and I want to express that there is beauty in every size and shape.

Painting with Pattern
Colorful, moving, staring back, emerging, leaning in, coming forward—I paint the figure with an eye towards the universal appeal of a woman. From portraits to iconic images, from subtle to subversive, from large scale to intimate—the pictures are about the beauty in the form.
One of the variables I use in this exploration is pattern. The repetition of shape, color and line. There seems to be an infinite number of ways to apply pattern.

The Toughest Girl Alive
These paintings were originally done for the world premiere of The Toughest Girl Alive at Moxie Theatre on January 15, 2011. Javier Velasco directed and choreographed the show.
I painted four portraits of local Blues star Candye Kane, for her title role. They fit with my theme of painting women in performance and celebrating women of all sizes and shapes. Her most powerful image is singing on stage. She has portrayed super hero and boxer characters for her music CDs.
